Tyler Music Lesson Blog...
The "One Teacher Trap"
In my experience, parents of music students often fall into the "one-teacher trap." Typically, a student begins their musical journey with a single teacher. Over time, this teacher may miss lessons due to illness or family demands, or they may relocate, necessitating a new teacher. When this happens, parents may feel anxious about the change.
While it is natural to grow close to a teacher, I reassure parents that a new teacher can offer fresh insights into their child's learning. Changing music teachers provides students with new perspectives, advice, and performance recommendations. They also learn to communicate with different authority figures and adapt to various teaching styles.
Think back to a time when a familiar figure in your life moved on, like a beloved hair stylist, pastor, or sports coach. Often, the person who replaced them brought new motivation and growth opportunities. Similarly, a new music teacher can offer a different perspective that might better suit your child's skills and practice methods, potentially fostering a renewed enthusiasm for their instrument.
I once had an adult student who was very attached to his regular teacher. When his teacher was unavailable, we arranged for a highly experienced substitute. However, the student refused to attend the lesson, missing out on a valuable opportunity. This underscores the importance of being open to change.
I believe students should have at least three or four different teachers over time to benefit from diverse insights and approaches, enriching their musical education.

Help for Teens Who Hurt Themselves
Self-harm among teens is a deeply concerning issue, often arising from feelings of depression, anxiety, and overwhelming emotions. As an director and instructor at Athens Music Academy and Tyler Music Academy, I have had the privilege of witnessing the transformative power of music in the lives of troubled teens. Through my experiences, I have seen how music can provide a healthy outlet for emotions and foster a sense of purpose and community. This blog is dedicated to sharing stories of hope and healing, highlighting the benefits of music in combating depression, and encouraging parents to consider music lessons for their children.
**Cassandra's Story**
Cassandra (name changed for anonymity) came to me as a troubled teen who was not doing well in school, had disciplinary issues, and was engaging in self-harm. She was a fan of the band Avenged Sevenfold and loved music, so her mother brought her to me for guitar lessons. After a few weeks, her mother approached me, visibly emotional. She said, "I hate Avenged Sevenfold," and I agreed, not being a fan myself. But then she continued, "I hate Avenged Sevenfold, but ever since you've been teaching her one of their songs, I hear it all the time. Even though her playing is still improving, I love when I walk by and hear that music, I know she's holding her guitar and not hurting herself." By the time she finished speaking, she had tears rolling down her cheeks. That day, I realized that I wasn't just teaching music; I was changing lives. It was a moment that affirmed my calling to help others through music.
**The Benefits of Music in Fighting Depression**
Music has been scientifically proven to have numerous benefits for mental health, particularly in fighting depression. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that music therapy significantly reduced symptoms of depression in participants. Music can serve as a powerful emotional release, allowing individuals to express feelings that they might not be able to articulate with words. It also provides a sense of accomplishment and purpose, which can be particularly beneficial for teens struggling with self-worth and identity.
**Famous Musicians Who Have Battled Depression**
Many famous musicians have publicly shared their battles with depression and how music has been a lifeline for them. One such musician is Jonny Lang, a renowned blues guitarist and singer. Lang has spoken openly about his struggles with depression and how music helped him navigate through dark times. By channeling his emotions into his music, he found a way to cope and ultimately thrive. His story is a testament to the healing power of music and its ability to provide solace and hope.
**The Supportive Music Community**
The music community is known for being a supportive and encouraging environment. It offers countless opportunities to build friendships and find a sense of belonging. For teens who feel isolated or misunderstood, joining a music group or taking lessons can provide a much-needed social outlet. The camaraderie and mutual support found in music communities can be incredibly uplifting and help teens develop positive relationships.
**Fay's Story**
Another inspiring story is that of Fay (name changed for anonymity), who started taking singing lessons to improve her voice. She later revealed her desire to write music, which led her to learn the guitar. During this time, she confided in me about her history of self-harm. She hadn't engaged in self-harm since she began writing music. I told her, "When the emotions get too much to deal with, don't cut yourself. Make your pen bleed out the words on paper and get your emotions out that way." Since then, Fay has written hundreds of poems and several songs. She is now a thriving adult who continues to turn to writing and music when faced with difficult emotions, and she has not self-harmed in years.
**Conclusion**
Music can be a powerful tool for helping teens who hurt themselves. It provides a healthy outlet for emotions, fosters a sense of purpose, and offers a supportive community. I encourage parents to consider enrolling their children in music lessons, whether they are struggling with self-harm or not. At Tyler Music Academy and Athens Music Academy, our dedicated staff is committed to helping children find their voice and steer clear of negative and dangerous behaviors. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our youth, one note at a time.

The Importance of Music Lessons with Tyler Music Academy
Music is important. 85% of American adults say music is a "very important part of their lives" and along with that statistic, of those who haven't played a musical instrument, 82% wish they had learned a musical instrument and 67% expressed an interest in doing so.
Help your child or yourself not be in this group and sign up for music lessons. Lessons have shown to lead to a higher IQ. There have been many many studies supporting this claim that children’s IQs increase even after just a few weeks of music lessons. Brain scanning technology reveals that brain activity increases following musical training, and some many parts of the brain even grow larger! Music lessons are one of the best activities to keep the brain sharp as we age. So you are literally giving yourself and your children a gift that will help for life.
Believe it or not, learning an instrument helps you to learn more languages. As you learn an instrument, children become accustomed to the variety of sounds that they would not have recognized before. This trains their ears for the nuances and subtle sounds of language.
It makes children feel good about themselves. Children are not alone in this wonderful rush of feel good hormones , as adults no doubt get this rush too. Nothing compares to finish a beautiful piece of music being completed.

Drum lessons at Tyler Music Academy
Why drums?
Drumming is a great way to get kids excited about music at a young age. Kids love banging on things, and as an instrument, drums offer a really fun experience for them to explore.
Drums are also great for kids with ADHD or other learning disabilities because they require less fine motor control than many other instruments. They're easier for kids to play, so it's easier for them to feel successful and motivated!
And if your child wants to play the drums in school? You'll be glad you taught him/her yourself! With Tyler Music Academy drum lessons, we'll make sure that your child gets started with the right technique and rudiments so that he/she will transition smoothly into the marching band when high school rolls around.
The right age
Drum lessons are a great way for kids to learn about music and how it's made. The right age to start drum lessons depends on the child, their personality and their level of interest in learning drums. Kids have a natural instinct when it comes to wanting to imitate what they see while they're still young. We've seen many children who appear less interested in beginning drum lessons at first but once they begin playing, they become fully engaged with the instrument and its possibilities!
Some adult students come into Tyler Music Academy looking for ways to supplement their musical abilities or interests outside of work or school. Perhaps you've always wanted to play an instrument but never took the time because you were too busy with other things? Or maybe you're coming back after years away from music? We can help!
Our instructors are patient, friendly and understanding if this is your first experience playing percussion instruments like bongos or drumsets - so don't worry about it! We'll take care of everything else as long as you show up ready for some fun-filled days filled with new experiences that will inspire creativity as well as strengthen coordination skills!
Learning to read music
Learning to read music is a fantastic way to improve your technique, and it's something you can do at any age. If you like the idea of being able to play along with other musicians, reading music could be just what you need!
Drummers often learn how to read music by starting with basic rhythms. The written notes are sometimes called “dots” or “bars” depending on their position on the staff (like bars in a prison). These dots tell you when certain beats in your measure will occur—the beginning of each new bar will always have an upbeat or downbeat that tells you which note or chord should be played first. For example, if there are four measures in a song and each measure has four beats (1-2-3-4), then the first beat of each measure would be counted as "1".
When should I start private lessons?
When you're ready to take your drumming to the next level and learn some new things, private lessons are a great way to go. Private lessons allow you to focus on music that's important to you and gives you access to a professional as an instructor.
If you decide that private lessons are right for your situation, Tyler Music Academy offers drum lessons for all levels of musicians. From beginners who want to learn from an experienced teacher or those who have been playing drums for years but want a new challenge; we've got something just right for everyone!

Why take music lessons at Tyler Music Academy?
Recent studies show students get better grades when they take music lessons. A recent study has shown that students who take music lessons have better grades, more confidence and improved social skills.
When you learn to play an instrument you are expressing yourself in a way that no other academic subject can provide. Playing an instrument is the best way to build confidence in yourself and others, which are both important skills in a child's development. The reason for this is because playing an instrument requires discipline, focus and self-expression - all of which are very important qualities employers look for when hiring employees!
Music students also have better social skills, confidence and learn to express themselves.
Kids who take music lessons are more likely to have friends, get involved in extra-curricular activities and less likely to drop out of school. In fact, kids who study an instrument tend to go on to earn higher wages than their non-musical counterparts.

Our musical ladder system helps guide students through the learning process. The Musical Ladder System helps keep our students stay motivated to practice and of course everyone thinks their practice buddy is pretty awesome (ask about how you get a practice buddy!)
Our goal is to not only teach you how to play an instrument but also develop your musicianship skills so that when you're finished with lessons, you'll be able to join any ensemble and perform confidently on stage at showcases, competitions, or gigs.We have two showcases per year so family and friends can come hear what you've been working on!I'm sure you've seen children's programs where students get to perform in front of an audience. The Tyler Music Academy has two showcases per year, so family and friends can come hear what you've been working on! It's a great way for students to build confidence in their musical ability and see the fruits of their labor. Students also get to show off their hard work, ask questions about how they could improve their technique or performance style, and even meet other musicians who may become friends with them later on.
As an adult who has taken music lessons at TMA, I would highly recommend that any student take advantage of these opportunities. In addition to performing my pieces with my teacher at the end-of-year showcase last month, I got to hear other students play as well—some were older than me! Even though we were all different levels of proficiency and experience levels relative to each other (many had been taking lessons for years), it was still inspiring for me because everyone sounded good at whatever level they were currently playing at.
At Tyler Music Academy we teach ALL AGES, from age 2 on up to adults.

We strive in not only teaching the basics of the guitar, but useful skills for the studio, university level, and out on gigs, no matter whether they plan on playing large music festivals or at the local church. There are certain skills our teachers help students to understand that an online teacher cannot help with. Our teachers are also a great resource when students want to start breaking into the music scene locally.
Whether you just want to play at home or on a huge stage, we'd be glad to help you along on your musical journey. Call us at 903-617-6623 or REQUEST MORE INFO here.

How is Tyler Music Academy different from other music instructors around the area?
There are a lot of options around Tyler for music lessons and we are proud to say we are the best and being the largest private music academy in East Texas helps properly qualify us to make that statement.
Our best asset is our teachers. We have been open for 6 years and this has been our greatest quality since day 1. When I was considering opening an exclusive music academy I secret shopped the other music lesson places with my daughter. It was eye opening. I went into the largest studio in Tyler at that time and I actually heard a teacher screaming at the student while I was waiting. It wasn't just any teacher, but the actual studio owner that was screaming at a child. I walked out and couldn't believe what I heard (which is part why we have cameras in every room and glass doors and always welcome our parents to sit) and I guarantee you, you will NEVER experience that at TMA. The days of the wrist slapping and yelling music teachers is gone in Tyler, Texas.
Our crew of teachers teach both classical material and more modern and pop material. The teachers are active in staying on top of new music and already know much of the classics.
We answer our phones! Whenever I was secret shopping, no one answered their phones and worst of all, most never returned the call. We answer from 9am-9pm and if for any reason we are on the other line, we are active about calling back as soon as possible. Not only that but we have active text and email for all of our systems, so no matter what our students have a way of getting in contact with us.
Musical Ladder! We love this wonderful system that is patented and we are the only ones in Tyler to offer this to keep students engaged and working on goals.
Family Safety Planning. This means every teacher is thoroughly background checked (local, state, federal). Each room has a camera that is viewable from both lobbies and we always welcome parents to sit in on lessons.
Music lessons is all we do. While other locations are more worried about selling you something from their retail store, we only concentrate on music education. It is our focus it is our passion. You and your child's music education is our only focus.
Two student showcases a year. Covid has no doubt made this one interesting and even now we just had a delay on our most recent recital, but we offer two per year. Part of the education process is performing for others. EVERY student who has done a showcase has walked away with more confidence and more pride than they had before and because of this we will continue doing showcases.
We continue lessons in the summer. Some studios shut down, which leads to teacher loss, skill loss, and students who are bored most of the summer. Our students practice throughout the summer and many become part of our summer rock band program. We tend to have a lot of signups for summer, so for the best time slots, try to get in before the summer hits.
I could go on and on and on about all of the great things about Tyler Music Academy, the teachers, the front desk staff, our students, the Musical Ladder, but I'll just encourage you to keep on going with your lessons or if you are reading this and not a part of what we do, call us up at 903-617-6623 and come be a part of our musical family!

Setting Up Your Home For Success For Your Music Student
At our house, I have an entire room dedicated to music and books. I call it the music room, my wife likes to call it the guest room. Either way, it is a great place for me and my children to practice our craft, BUT you do not need an entire room for a successful music practice space.
The most important part is to have a dedicated space and it could be a literal corner in a room or any area where you or your child can go to practice. The three elements you need in this space is a chair, a music stand, stand for the instrument. Obviously piano or keyboard and drums will create a dedicated space, but please read on, because you want to be sure you have all of the elements to build success.
Obviously you want a comfortable chair. A music stand will hold your music ready for daily practice so it is only put up and brought out on music lesson days. Lastly the instrument stand (either a wall hanger or ground stand). There's a law in physics that says an instrument in a case tends to stay in the case, or maybe it was something about an object in motion. As you can see I'm not a physics guy, but an instrument in a case will remain in a case in a lot of cases. It is important that as soon as a your weekly lesson is done to get that instrument on a stand so it is ready for your at home practice time.
Generally we recommend 10-20 minutes the first couple of months of lessons and 30 minutes to an hour beyond that. We do have students that reportedly do 3- 6 hours daily, so chair comfort is definitely something needed!

How to Select the Right Music Teacher
We have all heard the nightmares of bad music teachers. The crotchety old lady who screams when a beginner student hits the wrong note, always has the metronome turned up a little too fast because it's the same one she's had for 40 years and it's not working correctly. I've even heard of another local music teacher who smacks the keyboard with a ruler when students hit wrong notes. Music lessons are not supposed to be scary.
We offer a great variety of music teachers for all ages and skill levels. We hire the best teachers in Tyler , TX. We look for a few things in selecting the right music teacher.
Can they read sheet music?
You would be surprised how many teachers only play by ear. While ear training is important , it is faster to gain skills by reading sheet music.
Can they play outside of the sheet music?
There are some teachers that cannot jam or play by ear. This is just as problematic as someone who can't read sheet music is someone who only reads sheet music.
Can the teacher play and teach current pop songs?
Knowing the great classical pianists is expected for anyone studying piano, but are teachers staying up to date with music trends. Can they play popular music? With modern worship music changing so rapidly, many students come to us because they can't figure out how to adapt to popular music that doesn't have sheet music. Our teacher are pros at picking it out by ear and applying it to sheet music if necessary.
Are they keeping up with technology?
What can we say, but our teachers are hip and cool when it comes to technology. We offer video lessons, zoom lessons, use a variety of technologies in the lesson room (like a digital metronome), to make sure the lessons go as planned. We even offer viewing of all of our lessons so parents can keep watch from their phone or our lobby. There is such a large variety of new technology coming out daily. We constantly research and use the best we can find in our lessons.
Does your teacher answer the phone?
The problem with in home lessons is that teacher's get distracted. They either have to take phone calls during the lessons or they don't answer their phones when you need to talk to them about lessons and or scheduling. We have dedicated front office staff to answer all of your questions and help with any scheduling needs. We also answer our phones from 9am-9pm.
Is your teacher background checked?
We background check every one of our teachers. This ensures the safety of our students. We have turned away some potential teachers who now teach out of their house because of a less than stellar background check. Be sure you can get your teacher's background check, especially if you plan on leaving them alone.
We would love to get you on your musical journey. Call us today at 903-617-6623 or fill out your information on the tab to the right.

Homeschooling and Music Lessons in Tyler
Finding a teacher to fit with your homeschool life can be difficult in Tyler, TX. You'll be glad to know not only does Tyler Music Academy work well with homeschool families, we are a homeschool family ourself.
Most of our competitors do not have teachers available until after they get off of their regular day job, while we offer lessons specifically for homeschool students , while public school is still in session. These are usually calmer and quieter times around the studio as opposed to a 4:30 on a Tuesday, while one of my favorite times because I can hear all variety of lessons going on, it is extremely busy.
The only thing we do not offer is in home lessons. I strongly caution against you taking your child to someone's house, or allowing someone into your house. Being in this industry for 12 years, we have heard every horror story. I'll share one story that is NOT in any way related to Tyler Music Academy, in this link here, but know it is disturbing and is the typical case I hear when in home lessons go bad. Do NOT allow your child into someone's private residence for lessons and do not allow someone in your home for private lessons.
We know you truly care about the safety of your child, so we do a federal and state background check along with security cameras in every room and the video feed carries into our lobby so parents can sit comfortably and watch. We also have all rooms where you can view in from the hallway and we always allow parents to sit in on lessons. we have a complete open door policy. We've never had a student safety issue and thanks to our Student Safety Plan, we will keep it that way.

Piano Lessons
Piano lessons are one of the best ways to get into music. On the surface is just pushing buttons in an orderly fashion! If you know someone that can push a button (children are great at this right?) then you have someone that can start playing. We start piano lessons for private instruction at age 5, but our Tiny Tots class start at 2 and is a great way to introduce children to music in a fun way with other children their age.
Piano lessons are great if you play a string instrument and want a more logical way of thinking about music theory. On the surface music only has 12 notes. 8 natural notes (white keys) and 5 sharp/flat (black keys). A piano looks daunting at first, but it is really these same 12 notes repeated over and over in different tones.
If you are looking for piano lessons in Tyler, TX, come take a tour or call up our store and get going today. We are East Texas' largest music school and have exciting teachers ready to teach you or your child.
